Carlina White’s Abduction

On July 15, 1987, Carlina White was born to Joy White and Carl Tyson in Harlem, New York. The parents took their daughter to Harlem Hospital Center for medical care on August 4, just 19 days later, after a 104-degree (Fahrenheit) fever. A woman in a nursing uniform helped the parents while they were at the hospital. She was neither a nurse nor a doctor. The woman dressed as a nurse had been seen around the hospital many times in the weeks leading up to the encounter with the White’s.

According to the hospital, someone stopped the flow of medicine and kidnapped the baby in the middle of the night. The hospital had a surveillance system that wasn’t functioning at the time. A person described as the “woman dressed as a nurse” was seen leaving the hospital at around 3:30 am but did not appear to be holding a baby. A witness said the woman was heavyset, so they theorized the baby might have been hidden in the nurse’s coat. This is the first known abduction of an infant from a New York City hospital and will be one of the longest non-parental abductions in the United States.
